Everything About Bubble Standard And Developer License Types For Templates

Introduction

There are different types of licenses on Bubble, and when you hop on to the Bubble Marketplace policies for the first time, it’s important to get a proper understanding of their types.
The truth is, there is no rocket science. 😊
Imagine several new clients coming to you at the same time. Everyone has interesting projects, you just get torn as you want to work on each one. But where do you get so much time?
It’s physically impossible to do this amount of work!
Meanwhile, customers also can not wait in line for long. And most likely they won’t and will go to your competitors.
Now imagine - you do not need to refuse new clients, even though your plate is already full with other projects.
You can accept the proposals and deliver results in just a few days, not compromising on quality at all. Vice versa, getting more and more positive reviews.
Not to mention that your income is going up too.
You can spare more resources for self-development, investments, or personal projects - everything is in your hands.
With a Developer license custom development becomes easier and a lot more effective in terms of time and energy.

When do you need a Developer License?

Simply put, it all comes down to what do you want to do on Bubble, and what is the nature of your project.
🤔 Want to resell your work as a freelancer or as a development agency specializing in no-code? 👉 Get the Developer's license.
🤔 Want to use it for your own business or internal purposes? 👉 Get the Standard license.
Having the developer license allows you to create an unlimited number of apps for third parties (i.e. clients, partners, etc). How do you do that with a single template?
Well, the word itself is self-explanatory. It's a template. You can create as many applications based on it as you need and then customize them according to the specific needs of the client.
The benefit is that it has all the UI, UX, and basic features set so all you need to do is carry out some simple customizations. 👍
All with just a single catch: you need to have the developer license to sell apps made with a template to clients.
Hope you got a basic idea of what standard and developer licenses are. Now with that out of the way, let’s dive into specifics.

Developer License is also available for Zeroqode templates.

What's The Difference Between Standard And Developer Licenses?

According to the Bubble Marketplace policies, you can get a Standard License and a Developer License.
The Standard license for the Templates allows you to incorporate them into as many applications as you like. The amount is unlimited.
However, there is one catch: you cannot, under any circumstances, sell these apps to third parties (clients, etc.)
This simply means that once you buy a template with a standard license, you cannot resell apps made with this template further. You can only use them for your own purposes only - your own apps or internal tools.
The developer license is pretty much similar to the standard license in that you can incorporate the template into an unlimited number of applications. The only difference is that with a developer license, you have the liberty to act as a developer and resell the applications made with the template to third parties.
The developer license is best for development agencies and freelancers who can use the template with set UI, UX, and basic features to develop apps for their clients faster. 📈
Please do keep in mind that for both of these Licenses, you only pay a one-time fee following the Bubbles Marketplace Pricing and Payment policies.

You Want To Use A Template For Your Own Project. Which One Should You Purchase — Standard or Developer License?

In cases that strictly match your interests, yes. Buying a standard license is best if you want to use a certain template/plugin for your project only.
But remember that in case you change your mind in the future and decide to sell personalized and customized variations of your project to potential clients based on the template you used with a standard license, you cannot do that! For that, you’ll need a developer license.
⚠️ Bubble reserves the right to delete incompliant applications on short notice.

Can I Upgrade Standard License to Developer License?

If you’re wondering whether to start with a Standard license to see how things work out, and then upgrade to a developer license when things work out for the good, then the short answer is: Yes. You can upgrade a Standard license to a developer license.
You can use a standard license to start a project, and then if you find a potential client for the project, you can simply upgrade the license. 🚀
You can also start a certain project for your client with a standard license. However, before you hand out the project to the client, you will have to upgrade your license to a developer one. If you don’t do that, Bubble will delete your application on short notice.
✔️ To upgrade a standard license to a developer license, all you have to do is pay the difference.
However, do remember that once you are done with the upgrade of your license, you cannot, in any case, downgrade it. That is to say, you can convert a standard license to a developer one, but you cannot do it the other way around.

How to Upgrade a Standard license to a developer one

Just follow these simple steps and you should be good to go:
  • Login to your Bubble account
  • Navigate to the Marketplace. Once in the marketplace, find ‘Purchased templates’ and go into its ‘details’ page.
  • On the template or the plugin page, there will be an ‘upgrade’ button instead of a ‘buy template’ button.
  • Click the button and checkout will pop-up.
  • Go to the checkout through the pop-up and it will show you the additional price you’ll have to pay for the upgrade.
  • It will also show the type of license to which the template will be added. Make sure it’s the upgrade you want.
  • Choose the upgrade with the price to pay and you should get an updated version of your current standard template.
After the update to a developer license, you should be able to access the default version of the template. Use the default version of the template to create as many copies of it as you want. You can later edit and customize each of those copies and resell them to your clients.
When you’re done creating a unique application with the template and selling it to the client, you provide full admin access to the application to the client. At this point, you should still be able to have full access to the original, default template.

Are There Monthly Fees I Should Be Paying After Buying The Developer's License?

According to the Pricing policy, you have to make a one-time payment only when purchasing a license for a template or a plugin.
This means that you buy the template only once, and then use it to create as many apps as you want whilst making good profits by reselling the apps to clients at the same time.
Regarding Bubble monthly fees, keep in mind that there is a free subscription plan*. You can use it to start building your project based on a template. Later, if you feel like Bubble is the right platform for you, you can easily upgrade to any of the licenses we talked about earlier.*

If I Buy A Developer License, Then Edit The Template, Can I Download The Code And Host It On My Own Servers?
Before we answer that, you must know that all the templates you get on Bubble are built by default on the Bubble platform in the first place.
You must also realize the fact that Bubble is a platform that specializes in no-code development. This means that the templates built intrinsically on the Bubble do not, technically speaking, come with a source code. Because if they did, then what’s the point of calling it a no-code development platform in the first place.
With that in mind, you should know that there is no source code for these templates per se. And that is mainly due to the fact they are built without one in the first place.
Hence, to answer your question:
⚠️ You cannot host templates on your own servers. And since the templates do not have a code in the first place, you cannot get the code for the templates either.
Essentially, Bubble hosts everything as a part of its business model. This is to say that you purchase your own, personal, domain name but you point it to the Bubble servers instead of pointing it to your own server which you created from scratch. The Bubble server, in turn, runs your Bubble Application.

Conclusion

Getting the hang of how different licenses work on the Bubble Platform might be intimidating. But they’re much simpler than you realized. It all comes down to what do you want to do with the template in the first place? Answer the Question and the rest will follow. 😉
